As a former contestant in the Miss Arizona Organization, I can say from experience that competing in pageants is lot harder than it looks. From practicing your talent and runway walk for hours… to mock interviews and attending as many community service events as possible… and fitting in daily workouts, contestants spend months preparing for  what will ultimately be a ten minute interview and five minutes on stage. Add to that the possible discomfort of being a Black face in a white space, and you’re in for a very stressful yet rewarding experience.

When I competed last year, I was the only Black contestant in the Miss category and there were only two Black young ladies in the Teen category. I was always secretly afraid that if I won, I’d have to get a tan because a local tanning salon is one of the major sponsors of the pageant. More realistically, I worried that I might be asked to straighten my natural hair and wear a weave on the Miss America stage. With that said, it brings me joy to see so many young Black women competing this year. Check out these contestant profiles and keep them in your thoughts and prayers this week as they compete for the title of Miss Arizona and Miss Arizona’s Outstanding Teen.
